As a dad, I’m starting to get a little sad now on Halloween. It is because I know that my kids’ days of Trick-or-Treating is nearing an end. Still have a few more years left with Gavin, but Elyce is already getting too cool for it. This is really my favorite time of the year, so it’s getting me a little sad as I think about it.

As a kid, I loved Halloween: The candy, the dressing up, the going out in the neighborhood for the night and seeing friends. When I got older, I got up to no good: stupid stuff as I reflect, but it was fun at the time (shaving cream fights, parties, etc). In college, it was a reason to drink and act like a dick (sorry for the vulgarity, but that truly is what we acted like with too much beer in our tummies).

And then, kids.

It has been kind of like starting the cycle again — I’m more a part of it than I thought parents would be. I mean, I loved watching them get into it and helping them get dressed, carving the pumpkin, and sharing the excitement of getting as much candy as possible. But I feel like that window is closing and I am becoming more reflective as I age, wondering what it will be like when they are ‘too cool’ for Halloween.

So Lucy, our Black Lab, likes her bed. Our cat, Wallie, likes it too. Wallie will sometimes take it over. So … Tina went out and bought Wallie her own bed (cats don’t need beds, am I right?). Tina put it in the living room, walks out and comes back a little later to see this:

So we’re trying to convince Lucy that she only has ONE bed. She’s still learning.

This is what we see each year down in the valley (we are on the NW Side of ABQ, and have a great view of this every year – many times they all float right over our house) – it’s pretty spectacular sight every morning for 9 days …

While reading this, I kept thinking “why the hell does anyone really want a minute-by-minute of her flight from Philly?”

Seems of all the social networks that Twitter is the most dangerous … it’s quick, impulsive, and easy. Those 3 things (plus its permanence) are a recipe for trouble.

I saw the below diagram online the other day, and found it interesting. Having lived out of the geography of a clearly defined ‘home team’ (New Mexico, Oregon) for the past twenty years (and being a huge football fan {more-so college, of late}), I have found it interesting to see in what teams the locals root for.

Tina and I were talking about this tonight before dinner … and she had a brilliant -yet simple- solution for the President: “Why don’t they just lock the door?”

Is this really that hard?

Had some lightning in the area – got my GoPro and set to time-lapse, every 1 second. Out of about 1,000 photos … got 2. I suppose I’ll keep trying when we get the rare but appreciated thunderstorm …

So I’ve dabbling around quite a bit with my GoPros … the biggest irritation by far is the battery life. Saw the below tweak, and thought I’d share for those readers with a GoPro …

I’ve been eyeing the Phantom Drone for a few months now … really would be awesome with the GoPro. Came across the below video the other day, which shows you just how much this beast can change the game of photography.

So – I decided to purchase an SSD Drive for both Gavin’s and My computer. Installation on Gavin’s beast was fairly quick (game conversions, mostly). Mine has been another story. One takes for granted all the software and setup used over a 2 year period. What turned out to be a weekend project of ‘switching drives’ has turned in to a full-blown rebuild.

In the meantime, I have 3 video projects (our Spring Break Trip to CA, a recent work-related paint-ball fight, and some archives of old cam footage of the kids) in limbo on my old hard-drive. I will get to it, but I have to get this SSD fully set.

Just got back from vacation – pics here. I will be working on a video over the next few weeks (GoPro footage, a lot of video taken).

Awesome video showcasing the Scholarship and celebration of my sister’s son, who passed this past summer. Hard to watch without tearing up – he was such a solid kid.

Elon Musk is awesome: This is the first test flight of the F9R and an amazing moment for his ‘other’ company (he leads Tesla, as well): Reusable rockets are the holy grail of rocketry.

Gavin and I spent the morning building Elyce her new computer … He doesn’t look very thrilled here, because he is beginning to understand that this computer may actually be as fast as his own. He is EXTREMELY competitive (not sure where he gets that from), and wants to have the fastest computer in the house.

Been wanting to do this for a couple of years now – build a computer with Gavin. After the day was through, he seems to understand the different parts that we worked with today: motherboard, RAM, Power Supplies, and Video Cards. Next time we build, I will work with him on selecting parts and watch him put together. Can’t wait for that.
