I’ve watched SNL for years – and when this aired in 2000, I (like most viewers I’m sure) thought it was pretty catchy in a dorky way. Which ultimately made it funny.
So did Julian Casablancas of the Strokes – who recorded it 4 years ago. A new Christmas Classic.
Tablets will be coming soon to a restaurant near you. Now you won’t have to speak to waitstaff to eat out, and you will even be able to ignore those accompanying you at said dinner while playing tablet games at the table. Ugh.
But seriously – Applebee’s and Chili’s are both saying this move won’t result in layoffs of waiters/waitresses. Sure. With turnover as high as it is in the sector, they won’t need to – they just won’t replace them as they leave. Seriously – to think they would be foolish enough to keep that kind of overhead seems a bit silly.
Personally, I think this was just a matter of time and is a small sign of the inevitable in so many similar sectors. I’m okay with it – it’s just evolution and the future. But I can’t help but wonder how, in 20 years, this will affect the sector and similar ones out there …
Interesting video. Certainly interesting what you can do with Word (if, you know, you’ve got the time). I mean, you can pretty much do most things with any software nowadays, if you want. But this is over the top.

Ran across this collection of 127 images that are currently on the Voyager, which has been traveling in space since 1977. It’s pretty incredible to think how Carl Sagan and the gang had to sit in a room and contemplate just what exactly we could use to portray our race of beings to another, interstellar neighbor – who may only come across these artifacts thousands if not millions of years from now.
Sobering development, frankly, by the Chinese in regards to this ridiculous government shut-down here in the US. With the amount of our money they own and the amount of power they have, we don’t want to be messing with these guys long-term.
First – they are right. This is ridiculous. Bravado or Progress? I’m no politician – but I do know business. People who “make things happen” don’t fart around like these idiots in DC – you find a way to make it work, and together. Politicians, government employees – all people on the public dime – just don’t get it. Don’t care, don’t want to. Just work as little as possible, collect the check, get the benefits, then retire with full pensions. This crap simply does not fly in the private sector. If my CEO or any board members acted like this, they would all be out the door on their asses. Seriously. And no “pension” (seriously, pensions? What – is this 1954?).
Second – let’s not stir up things with China. NOT a good move.
Rio Rancho, being a relatively “new” city, is still under heavy development. Sure, with the economic slowdown of the past 5 years, there has been an affect; however, as things improve the activity is beginning again. There are large, clear swaths throughout the area that I know we’ll start seeing development on soon enough.
One different element that we have seen here is the prominence of roundabouts at intersections nearby. Roundabouts are kind of newer concept with many Americans … and you can tell when you see many of the local drivers approach them. Some stop. Some hesitate for minutes. Some just barrel through them – straight over the top (you can see tire marks where this has happened). Even the press has make it plainly obvious of the disdain roundabouts experience in comparison to the traditional 4-way stop beloved by Americans.
But here is why roundabouts are superior, as evidenced by the guys at Mythbusters – putting some science to the topic, yo.
I remember when I first heard of this – I donated. It was truly amazing to see how it spread and the amount just soared. It’s even more amazing to see what this little girl built …
So with all of this yapping today in the news regarding Tumblr and Yahoo’s Marissa Meyer’s foolish decision to buy Tumblr for 1.1b, I can’t help but think: Haven’t we been here before?
I mean, in its essence, Tumblr is a site for bloggers. Kind of like its blog-site predecessors: Livejournal, Blogger, WordPress, posterous …
Simply put, I’m just inclined to see them as the flavor of the month. I’ve seen all of the write-ups and the history and supposed ‘value’ of tumblr – but when you take the 10,000 foot view, tumblr is truly the current free blogger site to use – one that, once Yahoo gets its hands on it, is doomed to wither like its predecessors … until the next ‘it’ comes along. Like (word on the street has it) Quora?

Even though it looks like just another one of those “in the year 2020 this will happen” articles, it’s pretty intriguing what science continues to dig into.
I’ve seen a lot of 9/11 videos, like most people … but just ran across this one and it kind of hit a chord. Brings back the confusing horror of that fall day just a decade ago. I remember Tina and I were getting ready for work that morning, living in our first house in Portland. I remember ironing a shirt for work as we watched the news – when the second plane hit.
So I saw this at the Minneapolis airport this past week while traveling for work …
This is a pic of the moving walkways that are found throughout the airport. Most airports have them nowadays, but this was the first I had seen marked like this. Thought it was a pretty simple, yet effective idea. I instantly thought of my irritation with driving the freeways here in New Mexico. New Mexicans are terrible about slower drivers staying in the left lanes. It drives me up the wall. Couldn’t we do this to our roads? Just a thought that occurred as I walked through the airport …
